Just about the time we got used to the term Parish Nursing, we
find the title has now been changed to Faith Based Nursing. We in Oklahoma are blessed to have
a very proactive group of nurses ready to be the information center for the individual
parishes/communities in the state. It is through this group that educational health programs
will be available for all the members of our parish family.
Faith Based Nursing is a program which is a collaborative effort
of nurses in Catholic parishes, other faith communities, Catholic Charities, nursing schools and
hospitals throughout the state. It is a group of registered nurses that minister to the whole
person, physically, socially, spiritually, and emotionally.
The Faith Based Nurse serves as a health educator, a personal health
counselor, a resource for church and community services, an advocate for those in need and a
facilitator of volunteers in the parish or community in which they serve. In the near future
it is hoped that a program will be available to train people to take blood pressures on a regular
basis, to offer classes on stroke prevention, Diabetes and numerous other chronic conditions. There
is a large amount of health information available in order to enable all of us to lead a healthier
and happier life.
